The northernmost Confederate attack of the Civil War
On 19 October 1864 twenty Confederate soldiers under Lieutenant Bennett Young slipped into St. Albans from Canada, robbed its three banks of more than $200,000, killed one man and wounded two others, stole horses, and tried and failed to burn the town. Vermonters chased them back over the border. Canadian authorities arrested several, and the Canadian courts refused to extradite them and let them go, souring relations between the United States and Britain further. It was the northernmost land action of the Civil War. The St. Albans Museum keeps a room given over to the raid. PUBLIC.
