Alabama had its own gold rush in the 1830s, right behind Georgia’s: the Gold Belt runs the eastern Piedmont through Cleburne, Clay, Randolph, Tallapoosa and Chilton counties, and camps like Arbacoochee and Hog Mountain worked real placer and lode gold. It still pans out, and clubs work the creeks legally today. Check land and claim status, and never dredge without the permits.
