Cajun-French werewolf folklore, told as exactly that

Down the Cajun bayous they warn children of the Rougarou, a werewolf that prowls the swamps and the cane fields, a man cursed to run as a wolf-thing for a year if he breaks Lent or crosses the wrong hoodoo. Mothers used the story to keep children from the water’s edge; grown men still glance twice at a shape in the marsh at dusk. Pure Cajun-French folklore, riding on real, drowning-dangerous swamp.
