A stone fortress at the mouth of the Niagara River, held in turn by France, Britain and the young United States since 1726 and fought over in three wars. Its old French Castle is one of the most reputedly haunted buildings in the state, with the headless-officer legend of the well; it stands preserved as a museum you can tour on the Lake Ontario shore.
