A real Seneca-legend gorge and a documented 1763 ambush

Where the Niagara gorge widens below the falls, the Senecas long held a cave called the Devil’s Hole to be the lair of an evil spirit, a place of ill omen. In 1763 they proved the point, ambushing a British supply train on the road above and driving wagons, horses and men over the cliff into the gorge, the Devil’s Hole Massacre. The gorge and the state-park trails into it are spectacular and real; the curse is the old story.
